It is encouraging to see so many youngsters spending their time raising funds for children less fortunate than themselves.

Health Help International is grateful for fundraising by local young people.

Newport Scouts walked across Newport to raise £750, which was then doubled by Barclays Bank.

The 24th Scout group held a jumble sale at Summerhill Baptist Church and the 6th Newport West Guides held a sponsored event as part of their Community Action badge.

They had to pitch a tent, make a design on the ground using compass points and string, and put out night lights with a water pistol.

Ron Prosser founded Health Help International in 1999 in response to an appeal from a hospital in Zambia which had no doctor.

HHI seeks to help vulnerable and destitute people, many of whom are disabled and thus shunned by their societies, young and old, in those parts of the world where poverty and local conditions adversely affect them.

HHI raised money for medical equipment and assistance for those unable to afford treatment in Zambia and India.

Adam Goldsmith won the Welsh Schoolboy boxing title and will represent Wales in future bouts.Nicholas Humphries, Hannah Haywood, Catherine Kelly and Devon Nocievelli, of theYear 11 Special Unit, successfully completed their expeditions on the Gower and the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal to gain their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Richard Forrest, of Year 10, has joined the British Cycling Talent Team programme.

Not to be outdone by the pupils, two members of staff were nominated for the prestigious New Directions Inspirational School Awards.

Carol Leyshon was nominated for her role as admin manager and head teacher's personal assistant; and Pauline Marshall for her role as learning support co-ordinator across the school.

Everyone was delighted that Mrs Marshall won this coveted award for her SENCO work. She collected the award at a ceremony in Cardiff.

W.A.L.K: The programme of short, led walks in Newport communities has been published for August, September and October.

They include riverside, canalside, and park walks such as Beechwood, Christchurch, across Newport, and further afield.
