Beechwood & St Julian’s is well blessed with people of all ages working for charity.

These include Churches and Schools, which were both actively involved in the Shoebox Appeal, which ensured that children who have never received any Christmas presents were not forgotten.

St Julian’s Senior Citizens’ Club holds a weekly raffle for charity and this year presented the magnificent sum of £750 to the Meningitis Trust.

The Police Choir and the City of Newport Male Choir provide splendid entertainment and regularly hold performances for charity, often at St Julian’s Methodist Church.

Rotary had another active year with £500 being presented to Diabetes UK raised at a Garden Party Treasure Hunt.

Another highlight of Rotary activity was the 24th Welsh Disabled Sports Team Championship which was attended by two Beijing Paralympions, shotputter Nathan Stevens and world record holding cyclist, Simon Richardson, who trains at Newport Veledrome.

He brought his two gold and his silver medals to show what can be achieved with dedication and commitment. The community is fortunate to have so many local people willing to give up their time and talent in the interests of others.
