A MINE OF INFORMATION: I was interested in reading the article about Cwmbran Colliery in last week's Grassroots.
It was known as Porth-Mawr Colliery, and my wife's uncle worked there, and he used to tell me that they would walk as much as three miles to their workplace.
I also have two old miners lamps that came from the colliery.
Some people seem to think that the miners went into work at the pumphouse above the Square, in Upper Cwmbran, but they did not, that was where the air was pumped in and the slag and coal was brought out. I have a mining engineer's map which shows this.
