HAT-TRICK OF AWARDS: A Cwmbran primary school has won an award for its basic skills achievements - for the third time in a row.

The Basic Skills award was presented to Llanyrafon Primary School by the mayor of Torfaen, Cllr Bill King.

Head teacher at the school Wayne Jones said: "We were ecstatic when we found out the news.

"The staff and children have been working tirelessly to achieve what they have done. Everyone is extremely proud to have won the award for a third time."

The award, which is nationally recognised, is the result of an assessment by the the Local Education Authority.

It is carried out every two years and recognises schools which are developing basic skills in literacy and numeracy.

Mr Jones said: "We are committed to numeracy and literacy. All children and parents are aware of what they need to do to develop their skills.

"We encourage a home school partnership to develop learning and skills at home as well as school and I think this has had an impact on our success.

Everyone has been tremendously supportive."
