CANALS TRUST NEWSLETTER: Every so often I receive a publication called the Reed Warbler, which is issued by the Monmouthshire Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust. Its slogan is “Progress Through Partnerships”, and it certainly reveals that the organisation is full of enthusiastic members, headed by their chairman, events and media officer, Chris Morgan. Their president is Lord Raglan and their vice-presidents include Lord Crickhowell, the Newport MP, Paul Flynn, and Sir R Hanbury-Tennison.

During the recent half term holidays I happened to walk past the children's playground opposite the Leisure Centre and was delighted to see that it was absolutely packed with youngsters who, to judge by the screams and shouts, were thoroughly enjoying the various swings and things that have been placed there.

Two major paintings have been added to the Barker collection at Pontypool Museum. The new works, by Benjamin Barker and his son Thomas Barker, were purchased for £43,000 with the help of a Lottery grant.

THE COUNTY HOSPITAL LEAGUE OF FRIENDS: Fundraising is the constant aim of this group of hard working people, and their bank balance certainly received a shot in the arm when a local hospital porter, John Wedlock, joined with two friends, John Jayne and Nathan Powell, and they agreed to have their heads shaved for the charity.

THE LINDEN SINGERS CHRISTMAS PARTY: Every year the choir put on a Christmas show in the schoolroom of the Congregational Chapel in Griffithstown. This is very familiar territory for the ladies, as that is where they hold their weekly Monday practices.
