PRIMARY school pupils in Ebbw Vale are playing a key part in a £146,000 environment project aimed at forging stronger community links on their estate.

Youngsters from All Saints School, Hilltop, are helping the area's regeneration group turn an eyesore site into an asset, helped by a grant from Cydcoed Woods for All, an £18 million Forestry Commission Wales scheme funded by the European Union's Objective One programme, and the Assembly.

Residents and the schoolchildren have planted dozens of trees on the site, which borders the school grounds in the heart of Hilltop.

The community woodland project will create much-needed play facilities, including a kickabout area and bike track for youngsters, space for the public to enjoy, and an area where wildlife can develop, with new areas of native woodland, wildflower and heathland. The car park will also be improved and new paths installed.
