A NEWPORT man is one of the 350 people who have already signed up to run the Newport City Half Marathon.

Ex-Risca and Newport Saracens rugby player Ben Wilson is to take on his second half-marathon in the space of seven months in aid of St David’s Hospice Care.

A manager for PwC, Mr Wilson says: “I have always supported St David’s Hospice Care through playing their weekly lottery and have taken part in various fundraising events over the years.”

Mr Wilson was part of a team of runners for St David’s who raised over £3,000 in the Cardiff halfmarathon and said he is looking forward to Newport hosting its own big race. “It’s about time Newport had a large event like this.” he said.

The South Wales Argus is the event’s media partner for the race which will take place on March 3, 2013.

Starting and finishing at Newport International Sports Village, the race will follow a scenic route along the Riverfront path, past Newport’s iconic bridges and up to Newport Castle before heading to Caerleon along the cycle path. Organisers say the route is ‘fast and flat’ and will be great training for the London Marathon.

Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care thanked those who have signed up.

“We appreciate all who raise money to help us deliver care for our patients,” and he added: “We also need volunteers for marshals, stewards or litter-pickers.”

Newport-based Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell is supporting the race and said: “I’m thrilled to be able help open up the sport to even more people and raise funds for St David’s.”

Registration is £22, and runners can also register, make inquiries and donate at stdavidshospicecare.org
