THOUSANDS of people have now viewed pictures of 1980s Newport captured by photography students in the city.

The Argus has run a series of articles on images taken in the Newport Survey by documentary photography students, as university lecturers prepare to celebrate 100 years of documentary photography in the city.

This week, our stories had gathered 10,210 page views. And a number of people whose pictures were featured have responded to an appeal by celebration organisers to come forward and help them mark the event.

Today, we feature images including a number of youngsters in Newport schools - were you caught on camera?

Newport Survey was a project by documentary photography students did throughout the 1980s to capture life in the city - from families, churches and workplaces to events like street parties.

The pictures are due to be exhibited at Newport Art Gallery in April as part of the centenery celebrations.

Documentary photography senior lecturer at the University of Wales, Newport, Paul Reas said among those who have got in touch were people who recognised themselves as children in the photographs published in the Argus or know others in the pictures.

"We want as many as possible," he said. "We want to invite all the people that have responded to the exhibition and celebrate with us our centenary."

Anyone who recognises themselves or others in the photographs can contact Mr Reas at paul.reas@newport.ac.uk or call 01633 432976.
