BEFORE Whant took the stand yesterday, DS Neil Passmore was recalled to go over evidence.
DS Passmore told the jury that the knife used to stab Miss Grender has never been recovered, and her mobile phone and house keys have also vanished since her death.
Mr Kinch inquired about the CCTV gathering used by Gwent Police officers, touching upon missed opportunities where CCTV footage was not identified in time and had been automatically overwritten by the system.
Whant’s time in custody was also covered, and the jury heard he was eventually given diazepam to help him sleep when in his cell.
The jury was also told the door to Miss Grender’s would not have been locked when firefighters forced their way in as examinations were carried out on the lock and door frame.
News Whant would take the stand yesterday prompted a mass arrival of media at the trial.
Throughout the hearing, there have been three ever-present reporters, but yesterday 15 journalists filled the press bench.
