TWO Newport primary schools held their own golf festivals last week to celebrate the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Glan Usk Primary School and Mount Pleasant Primary School saw pupils organise the festivals themselves.

After over a week of preparation, the pupils then held the festival on Friday with some pupils at Glan Usk Primary even dressing up as golfers.

At Glan Usk Primary, year six pupils organised an opening ceremony before activities took place throughout the afternoon such as a golf ball treasure hunt, a photo challenge, hook the golf ball, crazy golf and pitch and put.

Each class had a different responsibility. For example, year three was in charge of refreshments and year five had to come up with ideas for the activities.

Deputy head Claire Williams said the festival allowed the pupils to learn more about the Ryder Cup and understand its significance.

Classes at Mount Pleasant Primary School also had different responsibilities such as advertising and memorabilia.

Some pupils had to organise the festival's opening ceremony and were involved in writing the music for this.

Other activities during the day included traditional Welsh dance, face painting and pin the club on the golfer.

Work on the Ryder Cup will now continue at both schools through the curriculum in areas such as ICT and literacy.
