NEWPORT’S SuperDragons are back, bigger than ever, and your Argus will be bringing you weekly updates in our SuperDragons Diary.

The Dragons first appeared in the city to celebrate the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor Resort, with 60 of the beasts dotted around the city to form a tourist trail for residents and visitors.

Now they are set to return, with 60 more making up the SuperDragon trail, only this time they will stand at five foot plus tall and have a slightly different design.

Made of fibreglass in Newport, the dragon sculptures are designed by Wild in Art.

There were more than 300 submissions from artists to design the dragons.

These were eventually whittled down to the 60 you will see in the city when the trail opens in the week starting July 2.

Designs range from a dragon covered in 2p coins, to a dragon decorated to celebrate Welsh music greats.

Other designs include that of Argus competition winner Ria Dummett, nine, with her SuperDragon Man, which will be turned into a giant money box to raise funds for the Mayor’s charities.

Kate Broadhurst, 23, who studied animation at the University of Wales, Newport, is designing a SuperDragon called Look Up.

She said: “I’ve enjoyed meeting lots of other local artists at the Dragons Den (the work space at Urban in John Frost Square where the dragons are kept).”
