DRAGONS are normally creatures of fire, but one of this year’s Super- Dragons took to the water instead, manning the decks of a Royal Navy ship.

Carys Heath’s Super- Dragon, Blodeuwedd, which will be based in John Frost Square when it returns to dry land, boarded HMS Severn to celebrate Newport’s affiliate ship paying the city a visit last weekend.

The brightly coloured floral dragon looked to be auditioning for Leonardo Di Caprio’s role in a future remake of Oscar-winner Titanic as it sat proudly on the front deck of the offshore patrol vessel.

The ancient mythical beast looked at home on the 80- metre ship when the crew, celebrating their visit to the city with a weekend of events, piled in for a picture with it.

Whether the dragon would be a help or a hindrance in the ship’s work intercepting narcotics and policing Britain’s fisheries is unclear, but it was in its element glad handing the dignitaries like the mayor of Newport, Lord Lieutenant of Gwent and Chief Constable of Gwent police who visited the ship over the weekend.

Blodeuwedd, who was the Celtic goddess of flowers, can now pack away its sea legs and prepare to join the other 60 SuperDragons at the Kingsway Centre on Friday for the official launch, before heading out onto the trail which opens on Monday.

Keep an eye on the Argus this week for the trail map and details of where your favourite dragons will be.
