HUNDREDS of people are expected to line the streets of Cwm on Friday for the annual Christmas lights switch-on and parade.

The event, now in its sixth year, is totally funded by donations and events held throughout the year by residents.

This year the organisers had to raise £8,500 to ensure the event could go ahead.

One of the organisers Ceinwyn Gwynne says its the support of local people that really makes the event so special.

"If it wasn't for people fundraising all year long, we wouldn't have any Christmas lights.

"We don't get any grants to put on the event, its just down us residents to stick together."

The night will this year include a carnival parade, after Cwm's summer carnival was cancelled due to bad weather.

The march will begin at 5.45pm with Father and Mother Christmas leading the way through Canning Street, Currie Street and King Street down to the Victoria pub end of Marine Street.

At 6.15pm, the carnival queen and court will join them for the main parade down Marine Street.

Cwm Youth Samba band and a tourch-light procession by pupils at Cwm Primary school will follow.

The switch-on will take place at 7pm and followed by a Santa Grotto visit at Cwm Town Band hut and a party at Cwm Sports Club.
