CHESS fanatics from Monmouth were put through their paces at the Welsh Schools Chess Finals.

The Monmouth School A team of Joseff Thomas, Jac Thomas, Sam Lazarus and Sam Turner were crowned Welsh Secondary Schools' Champions, held at Bishop Hedley High School, Merthyr Tydfil.

It was also a brilliant day for the B team.

Despite the fact that two boys had no experience of tournament chess the team won the Plate Competition.

The Grange A team of Kelland Chambers, Sean Edwards, Harri Bell-Thomas and Matthew Biggs had a tough encounter with the B team to come first.

They took the title of Welsh Primary Schools' Champions and the B team came joint second.
