A GWENT GP's trip to Patagonia is to still go ahead despite the eruption of neighbouring volcano the Chaiten.

Dr Sian Williams is planning a five day sponsored trek across the Welsh-speaking region in Argentina to raise money for Mencap.

But the neighbouring Chilean Chaiten volcano, which began erupting since the beginning of May, is currently spreading ash over towns and villages in the area.

It is worried that the volcano could explode, causing an earthquake.

If the trip goes ahead, Dr Williams will be joining BBC TV's Iolo Williams and others from across Wales on the journey, and has already raised her target of £3,500.

She says the group will be trekking across the regions ice fields.

"I've always had an admiration for people who do this sort of thing for charity.

"I've had to do a good deal of preparation for the. I've been doing lots and lots of trekking and I've been taking out the Rogerstone reading group for walks as well."

But Dr Williams is not phased by the development.

"I don't think the ash is as far south as the area that we will be treking," she said.
