ONE of this Bank Holiday's biggest events is off because the continuing downpours have left the Gwent venue under water.

About 12,000 visitors were expected to attend the two-day BASC Wales and Border Counties Game and Country Fair at Usk showground.

But the recent wet weather has left the showground waterlogged and with even more rain said to be on its way, the organisers have reluctantly decided to cancel the fair.

Glynn Cook, director of Wales BASC (the British Association for Shooting and Conservation) said: "This is our third year but it is the first time the Usk showground owners have seen the ground so saturated it is under water. With the rainfall forecast for the next few days the situation will get worse rather than better."

The event revolves around traditional rural activities and over Sunday and Monday visitors would have enjoyed a wide range of countryside displays, exhibitions and demonstrations ranging from clay pigeon shooting to a novelty dog show.

"It has really taken off and this would have been our establishment year," explained Mr Cook.

He confirmed that calling off the show at this late stage would cost his organisation a "substantial amount" as money was spent on advertising, promotion and programmes.

"We haven't yet made a final decision as to whether we should reschedule the fair for later in the year but it may be difficult finding a slot." But Mr Cook said they would definitely be back next year.

The Met Office forecasts an unsettled weekend with further rain or showers for most parts. It's set to improve next week.
