The Now and Then picture is of Commercial Street, Pontypool. I can recognise it because even though I live in Newport I still visit the open market in the street above.

We received the following memories of Rhiwderin village, too late for last week’s feature.

The Now and Then picture is of Tredegar Street, Rhiwderin. I was born in number ten in 1929 in a house with no electricity and an outside toilet. There were four shops at that time and my father worked two allotments in the back lane, the land has now been developed for more housing.

We attended Sunday School in the chapel at the bottom of the street. As children we all played in the fields around the village, those field too, now contain new houses. We also used to play on the ‘rec’ behind the school.

It was always a very friendly village and I can still name most of the people who lived there. I remember it as an idyllic place to live, and I still think of it as home.
