Last week’s picture was York Place near St Woolos cathedral. I lived at the bottom of the road from birth right through the 40s, 50s and 60s.

Our home was next to James the printers, the windows of which overlooked our back yard. Opposite, the large house used to belong to Dr Vine, who lived there with his sister, I remember that they had a maid and a lady chauffeur (they were the only people in the street with a car).

They also had two little white dogs who used to run into our house and up the stairs onto my bed. As children we used to play in the street or in Belle Vue park in complete safety.

I recognise the picture as being York Place, as I used to have piano lessons with Mrs Weston at number 25, who was the organist at the Baptist Chapel in Charles Street. I was given 1s 3d each week, and I paid a shilling for my lesson and I was allowed 3d for my tea.

This week’s picture is of York Place. I was born there at number 13. I used to have a job as a paper boy for Hardings the newsagent, just around the corner at Stow Hill. Also in the area was Dewsland Dairy just across the road from St Woolos cathedral where I was a choir boy.

Both pictures depict York Place, Newport, which lies between Clyffard Crescent and Stow Hill. It used to be a through road but now is only accessible as such to pedestrians. In the old days many of the houses were owned by ships’ captains but nowadays many have been converted into flats/apartments.
