A PROCLAMATION was issued to the civilian population stating precautionary arrangements had been made in the event of a hostile attack on our shores.
To prevent panic it was pointed out an attack was not regarded as imminent or probable.
A SERIES of coincidences befell two men belonging to the Newport Borough Police Force, one being killed and the other wounded.
Each came from the same village, went to the same school, joined the police force on the same day and then enlisted in the same regiment. It appears they became separated on the battlefield when one was wounded.
Newport education committee were discussing plans for two new schools for children with mental and physical disabilities.
The paper reported that even though the war had affected local grocery trade, prices as yet had not raised significantly.
