A 22-year-old man drowned in the River Wye at Redbrook after telling his friend that he was able to swim across the river. He reached a point in the centre before being swept downstream.

His body had not been recovered and it was feared that he had been carried into the Severn.

A 38-year-old farmer’s wife and mother of five was found dead on the railway line at Argoed. An all-night search for her had been conducted. The coroner returned an open verdict after her husband claimed that there was no steadier woman in the parish and she had left the house in a cheerful manner.

Three preservation orders in respect of trees were made, one near the Crick-Coldra motorway, one at Usk on the east side of the River Usk and at Christchurch Hill, Caerleon.

Freak weather conditions swept water up the Severn estuary and into the Rivers Usk and Wye causing the highest tide for 10 years. Houses in the Crindau and Malpas area of Newport were among the worst-affected properties.
