GWENT was chosen for a pilot project in which car and van drivers would be stopped, breathalysed and questioned about their drinking habits as the Department of Transport widened their research into road safety.
As a voluntary exercise anyone caught over the limit would not be prosecuted but they would be given either a lift home or time to sober up.
