LAST week we featured a picture of Beaufort Square in Chepstow.

THIS photo is of Chepstow. You have the cenotaph on the left with a canon. The left hand side is Bridge Street and the right hand side is St Marys Street.

On the right is the old cinema and on the far left is Hocker Hill Street. This was the only street with cobbles back then.

At the bottom is a pub called ‘The Five Alls.’ The horse and cart is of a green grocers. The horse is called Romeo who I used to ride out to St Arvans. I wouldn’t be able to do it now there is too much traffic.

I left Chepstow when I was 17 to join the Royal Navy. I am now 80 years old and Chepstow has not changed a lot.

THIS is the lower end of Chepstow High Street.

On the left is the cenotaph, just behind used to be our local Argus office.

In the middle of the picture used to be Walkers Ironmongery store, which is now a coffee shop.

On the right used to be a cinema.

I can remember on a Sunday they used to show horror films and one local lad used to make ghostly noises throughout the film. His name was Roger Meekins. He’s just as bad today.

Further down is St Mary’s Street leading to St Mary’s Church.

Up the top end of the high Street is a famous town arch which is the entrance to the town.

Also one of the oldest shops Herbert Lewis was run by the Griffiths family.
