LAST week we featured a photograph of Tovey Bros on Cardiff Road in Newport.

THIS is Tovey Bros Funeral Home on Cardiff Road, opposite the Royal Gwent Hospital. Toveys are one of Newport’s oldest funeral directors being established in 1860. They used to be at 41,42 and 43 Dock Street with their garage and carpentry works around the back in Union Lane.

Toveys moved when Dock Street was redeveloped in the early 1960s. My friend lived above No 42 and to get to his motorbike and later car in the back yard you had the choice of going down through the cellar and past the mortuary (the floor would get wet when the tide was in) or, walking around the block.

THE Now and Then is of Tovey’s the undertakers. There was a building nearby that people paid hospital fees and to get treatment etc. The hospital across the road there used to be a club which has changed. Also on the bottom of Clytha Square was a doctors surgery which has moved further up Cardiff Road. Nearby are toilets and a few shops and a cafe.
