LAST week’s Now and Then featured Frogmore Street, Abergavenny.

● This week’s Now and Then shows Frogmore Street, Abergavenny, with Frogmore Street Baptist Chapel overlooking the War memorial/Cenotaph.

In the then picture (on the right) is Scott’s the sweet shop, my grandmother always had a tin full of their famous boiled sweets readily available to give us.

Next to Scott’s was the Trocadero Cafe, and The Post Office, on down was Claude Stephens Paper shop, Heins and Allen Music Shop, The Abergavenny Chronicle Office, and the Co-op Ladies Shop.

Finally there was Maxwells the cold meat shop, my memories of Maxwell’s was that there was always a long queue outside.

On the left hand side there was a tobacconist and a newsagents, further down was Cox’s the fish and chip shop (they were the best in Abergavenny).

Further along was Richards the Ironmongers, Herberts, Harrington the Photographer and Jackson and Daly furniture shop.

The Now picture, shows Nicholl’s on the right, whilst on the left is a cafe and vintage dress shop, and the Britannia Pub (now closed).

Sadly the end going towards Frogmore Street Baptist Chapel has seen the unfortunate trend of shops closing, Richard’s the Ironmongers has closed, Farm Foods have also closed.

● I recognise the chapel in the Now and Then picture as being the one at the top of Frogmore Street, Abergavenny.

I still have a torch bought from Richards, an electrical shop on the same road.

I have many memories of the area as my wife, my daughter and I used to get off the bus at the top of the street to go to Bailey park swimming pool, where we spent many lovely summers.

● The Now and Then picture this week is Frogmore Street, Abergavenny, the church in the centre of the picture is Abergavenny Baptist Church and the road to the left takes you to Brecon or Merthyr whilst the road to the right takes you to Bailey park and Hereford Rd.

Frogmore Street hasn’t altered much from when the photograph was taken except for different traders and shop frontage alterations.

In the Then picture where the car is parked, the corner shop was many years ago a fish and chip shop where the food was cooked in a cauldron on an open fire, the shop later became a material shop.

Next door was Richards, an ironmongers and fancy goods shop. I can also remember Farm Stores being there too.

On the opposite side of the road is Tesco, Cable News and The Codfather, another fish and chip café, Nichols, and a gents outfitters.

Frogmore is still a busy part of Abergavenny.
