LAST week’s Now and Then picture featured the Angel Hotel in Abergavenny

● What a lovely picture of the Angel Hotel, Abergavenny, showing the coach and horses outside the hotel.

Many famous people stayed at the hotel, one of them was Elizabeth Taylor who had been visiting Richard Burton's family.

Film star Gregory Peck also stayed there en route while filming Moby Dick in Milford Haven.

My own wedding reception was held there in 1961.

The hotel changed ownership some years ago, and has been renovated to a very high standard.

The Angel Hotel is renowned for it's ‘afternoon tea’ – voted the best outside London.

● I recognise the Now and Then picture as The Angel Hotel, Abergavenny.

Back in the 1950s I used to work a few doors away in Halfords and one memory I have is of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor dining at the hotel, I also remember that Gregory Peck was also a visitor while filming in Wales.

I used to play saxophone in one of the local big dance bands at live events and one lunchtime I clearly remember Chris Barber passing the store.

He was playing on the Sister Rosetta Tharpe tour, so for me it was very significant to have spotted him.

The hotel has moved with the times and is still a very classic and popular landmark in the town.
