The Now and Then picture is of the Lydia Beynon Nursing Home.

I have very fond memories of the hospital as my two daughters were born there in the 1960s.

Mrs Eger Newport

I recognise the Now and Then picture as the Lydia Beynon Hospital, which is now part of the Celtic Manor Resort. Many years ago I used to deliver telegrams, and in the 1960s I used to visit the hospital on a regular basis with good wishes for the new parents. In fact one of my nephews was born there. It’s refreshing that this old manor house still now forms part of the luxury complex.

The Now and Then picture is of the Lydia Beynon Nursing Home, Newport. My mother used to tell me that when it initially ceased to be a manor house it was used for local women who bore children out of wedlock, but of course in the 50s, 60s and70s it was used as a general maternity hospital.

The building has changed very little and now forms part of the Celtic Manor Resort, which is of course owned by Sir Terry Matthews. It’s an iconic building, and Newport should be proud of it. It has played host to the Ryder Cup and is now due to hold the NATO summit next year.

The picture shown is the Lydia Beynon maternity Hospital. I was born there in 1952. Now the Manor House at Celtic Manor. Fond memories for me as I’ve lived in Vancouver Canada for the past 33 years.

The Then picture in the Argus on Tuesday 17th December is the old Lydia Beynon Nursing Home (as it was called then) Both my children were born there in 1954 and 1959 respectively.

Previously it had been the family home of the Beynons and when it became a nursing home it was named after one of their daughters. It is now part of the Celtic Manor hotel.

This was originally known as the Coldra House and then the Lydia Beynon Maternity home. I knew it as I had my wedding reception there in 1984 before it became the huge resort that it is now.

It was a beautiful place but all I see now is the monstrosity that dominates the area for all those who bask in their wealth.

WE had no memories of Crane Street, Pontypool from last week’s feature, but there’s still more memories of the Lydia Beynon Hospital, which has proved a very popular picture:

The Now and Then picture is of the Lydia Beynon Maternity Hospital. I have very fond memories as I had my two daughters there in 1956 and 1960. On the top floor were the birthing rooms and nursery and on the ground floor was the convalescence area. In those days, new mums stayed in hospital for 12 days, and I can still vividly picture the nurses bringing a baby in each arm down the grand staircase. The large bay windows opened to beautiful views over Newport.

Mrs Phillips, Cwmbran

The picture is the Lydia Beynon maternity hospital. I was born there in 1955. It is now part of the Celtic Manor. Pamela Curtis

I am sure the picture is of the Lydia Beynon nursing home. I had my second child, a daughter, in April 1959. In those days, we had at least 10-14 days recuperating after the birth, we were not allowed in the grounds until we were discharged. It is now the Celtic Manor, and my daughter had her wedding reception there 25 years later, she still celebrates her wedding anniversary there every year.

Mrs G Cook, Cwmbran

I think The Now and Then picture is of the Lydia Beynon Hospital. My daughter was born there in the 1960s and she had her wedding reception there in in the 1980s.

I remember the lovely views from the Labour Ward windows, but I also remember the noise of roadworks, so my stay there was at a time when the motorway was being constructed.

Mrs Maloney, Caerleon

This piece came in too late for last week’s paper: The Now and Then picture is of the Westgate Square and the HSBC Bank is clearly visible at the bottom of Stow Hill.
