THIS picture is Newport’s Commercial Street, the photographer would be standing near the bottom of Hill Street in the 1950’s.

In the distance is Newport’s fine town hall with its famous clock tower both of which fell to the wreckers hammers.

IN the Now and Then photograph taken in 1942 we are looking at Commercial Street towards town from the junction with Hill Street. The shop on the corner is Ford and Moores. There was a two way traffic system and in the distance is the town hall. The bicycles are parked unsecured by standing the peddle on the pavement. Many of the shops had a canopy which offered protection from the sunshine.
