IF I am not mistaken, the 'now' scene shows the Cross Hands pub, on the corner of Somerton Road and Chepstow Road.

As I have lived in Tasmania, Australia for past 48 years, it gives me memories of the late 1950s-1967, when I used to walk from my home in Ringwood Hill to Somerton park to watch County play.

When I was old enough I used to have a few pints in the pub, especially when County were playing night games, I think in those days, they were played on Monday nights.?? There also used to be a good chippie on Somerton Road.

IT’S Chepstow Road. I travelled via the road en route to Llanwern steel works for many years.

THE picture is of Chepstow Road, showing the Cross Hands pub in the background, on the corner of Somerton road in Newport. Not shown in the photograph is Beechwood Park where I spent many a day as a youngster playing with friends from Milton Road where I lived. On the left of the picture is Beechwood Road.

When I was 16 until 25 I spent with my friends many a happy hour in the Cross Hands pub playing darts or watching the successful darts team.

THE Now and Then picture shows the Cross Hands pub on Chepstow Road. The Wayfarers cafe is on that stretch of road also. If you turn right you go on to Somerton Road. The area is very familiar to me as I drive past every day.

THE Now and Then picture shows the Cross Hands pub, it’s a very old pub, over 100 years ago Mr Tuddock was one of the first owners. There is a lot of history in the area, on the opposite side of the road at the top of Lawrence Hill is Hatherleigh House was built by Henry Pearce-Bolt (who also built the Lyceum Theatre, The Queens Hotel and many houses in Pill) Eventually the house became Hatherleigh School, and Mr Fred Hando was one of its headmasters.

THE Now and Then picture is of Chepstow Road, and you can see tram lines in the picture. The trams used to travel along that road to Newport centre. The Cross Hands pub in the picture an old Newport pub, is still there and still has the same name. There is now a crossing and lights outside, the right turn leads to Somerton Road.
