LAST week we featured photographs of Market Street, Ebbw Vale.

The then photo is from 1949 with The Plaza Cinema and the improved front to the Libanus Chapel with a more modern appearance.

Trees are a new addition to the street at this time.

Before this, back in September 1867, the first section of the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway made its way over Market Street.

The Ebbw Vale Station was sandwiched between Market Street and James Street.

A signal box was at the south end of the station before the point where the line crossed Market Street on the level.

The station site has now been redeveloped to feature shops and a multi-storey car park.

There were only two memories of Market Street, Ebbw Vale, from readers who remembered the area.

This is Market Street in Ebbw Vale. It has all changed up there now.

I used to play in a band in the 60s up there.

THIS is Ebbw Vale’s town centre.

In the second photograph there is the car park on the corner and there are shops all along the right hand side.

Back then there was a two-way traffic system, however it is now all one-way.

If you make your way around to the back of the shops you will find the bus station.

Mr Kinsalla, Tredegar WE had one memory left over which did not feature in the edition on August 25, where we had a photograph of Charles Street in Newport.

My grandparents kept a cigarette shop and also a hairdressers shop at number six Charles Street.

Mary Isitt, Newport

ANOTHER memory which was not featured on August 11 about the Civic Centre photograph.

The Now and Then is of the Civic Centre. Nearby is Godfrey Road.

There were offices for the probation service.

Also St Mark's Church is there at the Goldtops and the register offices for births, deaths and marriages, which has since moved.
