Last week we featured a picture of Chepstow Road, Newport, showing the entrance to Wharf Road.

THE Now and Then Picture is of Chepstow Road leading to Eveswell where they built flats for Eveswell Court.

Opposite is St John Nursing Home.

A garage is next and a small supermarket, on the corner is Barclays Bank on the other corner is the George Hotel on Wharf Road.

On the right they took the back gardens of the houses to widen Wharf Road leading to George Street Bridge.

THIS is Newport’s Maindee Square at the junction of Wharf Road on the right, Victoria Avenue on the left where the old Maindee swimming baths were.

Chepstow Road leads away from the camera towards Eveswell School.

This old school was replaced a few years ago by a new school on the same site.

It now sits behind bright yellow iron gates.

From the dress the ‘Then’ photo looks to date to the early 1900s.

The tramlines are evident in this picture.

Just out of shot on the left of the ‘Now’ photo is the last remaining branch of Barclays Bank.

IT’S the view looking up to Eves Well from the junction past the George.

Towards Eves Well on the left used to be a club ‘Standard Telephones’.
