LAST week we featured a picture of J W Woodgates and Company on Chepstow Road.

This picture was located in the book Yesterday’s Newport by Terry Underwood which states the shop was “opposite Maindee School where one could purchase perambulators, bicycles and babies’ bassinets”.

Maindee school is now located on Rodney Road in Newport.

In ‘Johns’ 1938 Newport Street Directory’ on the Newport Past website, it reveals that J W Woodgates was located on 112 Chepstow Road.

However, it appears that 112 in Chepstow Road no longer exists. In last week’s now photo it shows the junction with Ace Cartridges on the left at 114 Chepstow Road and Lloyds Bank at 110 Chepstow Road. This would suggest 112 has been demolished. If anyone has any further information as to whether this is the correct location feel free to get in touch.

THIS is the junction of Chepstow Road and Speke Street in Maindee Square which is in the parish of Christchurch.

The shop on the left-hand side was Cartridge World and in the 1930s it was Bastrick Brothers, the ironmongers, and on the right-hand corner was Woodgates, the house furnishers.

Opposite was Maindee Junior School, now a car park.

Dave Woolven, Newport THIS picture is of Chepstow Road in Maindee where lots of shops have closed.

The bank is still there.

This picture is on the top side by George Street Bridge.

It used to be busy there but it’s not so busy now.

Jim Dyer, Newport THE Now and Then is of Maindee Square which Lloyds Bank is on the corner and Smiths cobblers is near.

There is also a shop that sold computers etc and Cayzers, a men’s outfitters that also hired out for weddings.

A charity shop is there and across the road was Thomas that sold washing machines, TV’s, etc.

They moved to Pill and it’s now a betting office.

Also The Bank Pub, The Scrum Half Pub and Maindee Hotel is there.
