LAST week we featured a picture of Cross Street in Abergavenny taken in 1910.
In the picture the Abergavenny Town Hall is visible.
This hall was designed by Wilson and Wilcox of Bath and in 1870 was built by Messrs S J Moreland and Sons of Gloucester.
The clock on the tower was donated by the ironmaster Crawshay Bailey.
A stone cross used to stand near the present Town Hall which the street was named after.
THE venue is clearly Cross Street, Abergavenny.
What is particularly interesting is the double decker bus in the “then” picture.
This is, I believe, a Milnes-Daimler 30hp which were built from 1904 to 1914.
The operator would have been Great Western Railways, who ran a service between Abergavenny and Brecon, quite a journey in those days.
The buses were German Daimler (later to become Mercedes-Benz) chassis which were marketed here as Milnes-Daimler as Milnes originally held the dealership franchise.
With the advent of the Great War, the market for German made vehicles collapsed.
