LAST week we featured a picture of High Street, Cross Keys, Newport.

Crosskeys is a village named after the first inn to be opened in the area, the Crosskeys Inn.

This building is now called the Crosskeys Hotel. Prior to the inn, Crosskeys was known as Pontycymer.

Crosskeys was originally part of the coal mining community of South Wales coalfield and was first created as part of Risca, around the 1830s, to assist local mines in the area.
