NEWPORT County boss Justin Edin-burgh has transfer listed three players in response to the Exiles’ shaky couple of weeks, the Argus can reveal.

All three set to depart Rodney Parade are forwards, two of whom were signed this summer.

They are former Rush-den men Ryan Charles and Jefferson Louis, while last season’s breakout star Jake Harris has also been informed by Edinburgh that he’s available, either on loan or permanently.

The axing of Louis is somewhat surprising, given that he’s not been a flop since his arrival, but Edinburgh is intent on clearing the decks before January when the transfer window re-opens, the Exiles’ thoughts on what is possible this season having changed vastly since the summer.

The axing of Harris and Charles, however, come as little surprise at all.

Harris, who came from Weston-super-Mare, caught the eye last season but has barely featured this term, even as a substitute.

And former Cambridge striker Charles will know he has underachieved throughout his tenure at Newport, to the point that Edinburgh is no longer even using him as a substitute.

The manager explained: “We have today informed all three players that we are circulating their availability, either on loan or permanently.

“All three players have a case for staying but it’s my job to make tough decisions even if some people might not agree with me.

“Jeff is especially unlucky as he’s done nothing wrong, but being where we are in the league, we want to kick-on.

“Jake is a goalscorer, there is no doubting that whatsoever, but he’s not started a game this season and he needs football, he needs minutes and he needs goals. So he’s on the list too, even though it’s one of them when you know it could come back to bite you.

“Ryan is one that needs to happen for both parties. He knows it hasn’t worked out for him since he’s been here and it is what is best for him too.

“I know there is a misconception of us being a moneybags club, but the truth is that if we want to strengthen in January we need to strike the right balance.

“I don’t want players sitting in the stand, it doesn’t help anyone.”

Edinburgh says talks with ex-Bristol Rovers defender Byron Anthony are continuing but the usual amount of red tape is likely to mean that deal doesn’t happen until the back end of this week, though he’d be suspended for Saturday’s clash with Hyde anyway.

Meanwhille, Edinburgh has confirmed County with be ‘in it to win it’ in terms of the FA Trophy, the Exiles travelling to Conference South high-flyers Welling on November 24 (TBC) for the first round.

Newport reached the final at Wembley last season, beaten by playoff winners York City, and Edinburgh wants to get back to the national stadium.

“Especially as we are out of the FA Cup, we’ll be trying to win it and playing as strong a side as we can,” he said.
