CHRISTIAN Jolley believes Newport County AFC can win the Conference title, which is why he opted to turn down their rivals to re-sign at Rodney Parade.

Following a blistering loan spell when Jolley scored five goals, he was re-called by AFC Wimbledon who attempted to auction the player.

The 24-year old spoke with Forest Green Rovers and Luton Town but rejected both with his heart set on reuniting with a side who never legitimately expected to be challenging for the title.

It has allowed County to seal a cut-price deal and Jolley is certain he’s made the right call, especially after Saturday’s 4-2 win at Lincoln City.

“I feel the result is a bit of a vindication of my decision, we can kick on and go for promotion, I know it,” he said.

“I did worry that it wasn’t going to happen when Newport and Wimbledon couldn't agree a fee.

“But we pressed on and eventually we got there.

“We get promoted and everyone will see that I’ve made the right decision.

“Newport was the right club for me, I had absolutely no doubts.”

Another signing from last week, winger Robbie Willmott, echoed Jolley’s sentiments after his two goals helped the Exiles to move within a point of leaders Wrexham with a game in hand.

“It was an enjoyable debut,” said Willmott. “I’m thrilled to be here, the boys have given me a nice welcome and to get two goals is hopefully a way of showing the fans what I can do.

“It’s a brilliant set-up here, very different from Cambridge and I’m looking forward to working with Justin Edinburgh.

“Everyone here is focusing on a promotion push and it made it an easy decision to come.”

Willmott laughed off Cambridge insisting they had enough players in his position, the former Luton man not starting for the Us in the past month.

He said: “I heard that, if that’s how they want to play it then fine, but I’m here at Newport, I’m going to carry on scoring goals and proving my point.”

Willmott is thrilled to be renewing the acquaintance of Aaron O’Connor.

“He was unbelievable on Saturday, I played with him at Luton and we all knew there that he didn’t get enough chances under two different managers,” he added. “His record this season shows he’s on top of his game.”
