Price targets title-tilt with Warriors

‘They should've signed him up’, shouted a Glasgow player as Gerwyn Price conducted a post-match interview following the Warriors 60-3 drubbing of Newport Gwent Dragons.

Now the 27-year-old from Markham wants to earn a stay in Scotland.

The Cross Keys hooker has signed a loan deal with the RaboDirect Pro12 title hopefuls until the end of the Six Nations.

With Doug Hall and Pat MacArthur on Scotland duty and Finlay Gillies and Fergus Scott injured, Price is one of three hookers that have been snapped up on short-term deals to fill the void.

He made his second appearance for the Scottish side in the thrashing of the Dragons, who he trained with in pre-season.

It prompted ex-Wales fly-half, and former Keys coach, Mark Ring to tweet, “Good to see one of the best hookers I've ever seen playing at Rodney Parade. Bizarrely for Glasgow!”

Next up is a top versus second clash when Ulster head to Scotstoun Stadium and another impressive Price performance could give another nudge to head coach Gregor Townsend.

“It's been great and now I want to stay until the end of the season and, hopefully, the playoffs,” said Price, who left his job as a house insulation sub contractor.

“My deal is until the end of the Six Nations but hopefully something will happen.

“That's down to me – I've just got to knuckle down, keep playing hard and try to impress the coaches.

“I'm really enjoying it and it is a totally different lifestyle. I train full-time, do weight and eat healthily with the club sorting out good diets, so it's better in more senses than just the rugby.

“I've wanted to go full-time for years and hopefully it will happen now because I'm not getting any younger.

“It didn't happen in Wales but hopefully it can in Scotland.”

After making his regional debut with a start in Zebre Price had to be content with a place on the bench against the Dragons.

It turned out to be little more than a training run with the Warriors scoring 26 unanswered points in the quarter of an hour he was on the pitch.

“I was hoping for a bit longer but 15 minutes was okay,” he said.

“I knew how strong we were and was pretty confident that we would win, but defintely not in a 60-pointer.

“The Dragons just didn't turn up and now we've got a really big one against Ulster, I can't wait.”
