Dozens of rusted trolleys were fished out of the Thames when Kingston University students took part in an underwater clean up.

Groups of students donned wet suits when they plunged into the Thames by Kingston Bridge on Sunday.

Piles of rubbish including 82 trolleys, skateboards, a full bottle of red wine, a soldier’s helmet from the 1950s and even a duvet were among the items pulled out by more than 20 volunteers.

Surrey Comet:

The activity had been organised by the Kingston University Students’ Union following a successful clean up of the Thames last year.

Jemma Houghton, volunteer coordinator at the students’ union, said: "There is an awful lot of rubbish in the Thames. The trolleys we found date back to about 10 years - they are some really old style ones that have not been removed.

Surrey Comet:

"It was a really long and exhausting day but we were pulling stuff out continuously."

Charity Thames 21 supported the event as did the Environment Agency.
