Kites, large and small, will fly over Malmesbury this weekend.

The country’s top flyers are once again expected to descend on the Worthys, demonstrating their skills in a range of displays.

Among the attractions will be the Rokkaku Japanese kite fighting competition where the contestants’ sole objective will be to be the last kite flying, having brought their opponents to the ground.

Other displays will include Team Flying Fish, flying routines synchronised to music; Team Sky Symphony, a leading sport kite display team performing aerial ballet, and by Stafford Wallace, an expert in the art of flying Indian fighter kites.

Various stalls offering everything from kites to refreshments will be available.

Jon Caton, of organisers Malmesbury Kite Group, said: “In this, its fourth year, we would like to get the public more involved.

“We invite them to bring a kite so they can learn to fly and take part in the altitude sprint, to get your kite as high as possible in a certain time.

“There will also be the ever-popular parachuting teddies. The kids love to see their teddies in the air.”

Last year’s thunderstorms cut the event short.

Mr Caton said: “It’s good to see the sunshine this time, we’re all set for a good festival this year.”

About 4,000 people are expected at the event, which runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is free while car parking costs £2 on site.
