Welsh quartet named in GB boxing squad
OLYMPIC silver medallist Fred Evans is joined by fellow Welshmen Andrew Selby, Sean McGoldrick and Joe Cordina in a 14-strong squad selected by GB Boxing for the World Amateur Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, next month.
Evans, the only London 2012 medalist still remaining on the men’s programme, has reconfirmed his commitment to the amateur ranks since returning from a short break after the Games.
The 22-year-old will represent Wales along with fellow Olympian and double European champion Selby and St Joseph's pair Cordina and McGoldrick, the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist.
GB performance director Rob McCracken said: “Major tournaments at this stage in the Olympic cycle are always tough and this will be a massive test for what will be a relatively inexperienced group.
“At the same time it is also a big opportunity for the boxers to show they have what it takes to succeed at world level and establish themselves as a key member of our squad as we build towards Rio in 2016.”
In addition to the 14 boxers selected by the British Amateur Boxing Association, the Welsh and Scottish associations are expected to name additional team members.
