NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh admits it is promotion or disappointment for the Exiles this season as their superb form continued at Adams Park.

The Exiles produced one of their most dominant displays of the campaign in the first half at Wycombe as Adam Chapman and Mike Flynn inspired a high-tempo and cavalier County who shone playing with an unconventional 3-4-3 formation.

Flynn’s sublime first half finish proved the difference as Newport showed their gritty side after the interval, digging deep to protect Lenny Pidgeley’s goal as they set themselves up for a fruitful festive period.

County’s league form is sensational, back-to-back away wins only partially telling the story with Newport beaten only once in their past nine games and having kept clean sheets in five of their last six.

And boss Edinburgh admits there is now a feeling that anything is possible for his charges.

“We are where we are in the league, the table doesn’t lie, we’ve put another marker down,” he said.

“We are in that mix and we deserve to be, we had that early start and wanted to show good intentions and send a message to people.

“When you have the chance to put pressure on your rivals you need to do that.

“At the start of the season our remit was to stay in the Football League, but it’s hard not to look at the other way now.

“If someone had offered me this return of points at the start of the season, I’d have bitten their hand off, we are where we are and we have to be positive and aim for as high as we can go.”

Edinburgh was thrilled with the performance of his side as they dominated for large spells and believes it will give his players good heart ahead of a trip to Burton and a home clash with Oxford.

“I was very happy with our performance, we dominated possession in the first half and played with a good tempo, you aren’t going to dominate possession for the whole game but when they came at us we showed the other side of our game and Lenny Pidgeley hasn’t really had a save to make,” he explained.

“I was really, really pleased with the whole performance.”

Edinburgh also had positive news for County fans on the injury front as the Newport walking wounded is reduced in numbers on a weekly basis.

Ryan Burge and Ismail Yakubu returned to the squad at Adams Park and midfielder Max Porter completed a rigorous warm-up before the game as he steps up his rehabilitation.

“Ismail is at about 70 or 80% and back in contention, Max is closer and did the warm-up with the team. We can’t rush these long-term injuries, but they are progressing well.”
