NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have confirmed that in-form full-back Dan Evans will be leaving the region in the summer.

The Rodney Parade regions have signed Wales and Lions number 15 Lee Byrne, who will be 34 in the summer, from Clermont Auvergne for next season.

They also have 19-year-old Hallam Amos, who won his first Welsh cap against Tonga last autumn, on their books, meaning that there will be no fresh deal for Evans.

“We’ve got to think of the future,” said director of rugby Lyn Jones. “Dan is a really good player and I am sure he will have no problem picking up a deal with an English or Welsh club in the future. That’s all I wish, that players move on and do as well as they can.

“I’ve made a decision that Lee Byrne and Hallam Amos will be our full-backs next year and I am sticking to that.”

Evans, 25, has been a real success since signing from the Scarlets in the summer of 2012.

He has played in 41 of 51 games and was the region’s top try scorer last season after crossing the whitewash nine times.

Amos has played most of his senior rugby on the wing but full-back is his preferred position.

"We've got to think of the future" so they replace a 25 year old with a 34 year old? What a truly thick idiot Lyn Jones really is. I wish nhe was leaving at the end of the season.

Think he meant Hallom was the future to be honest but I am sorry to see Dan go. Always been a fan.

My mate said he thought he would leave after Byrne signed and I said he would stay, I was wrong and very sad as all three would have been good . One starting one there and one leading the way. Very sad and daft decision for me.

Gutted that he's going - he's been the stand out player this year for the Dragons. Doesn't feel as if we are rewarding him with any loyalty for the efforts he's put in.

Perhaps he could convert to centre? He's a big lad that breaks the tackle well and has good hands - put him with Wardle and we have a formidable midlfield! Add that to Rees, Tovey and 3 from Brew/Amos/Harries/By
rne and we have a backline.

perhaps they have looked at that option and he decided its not for him so he wont get another contract, great pity that we are losing a very good player. Pity we need good players.

Great idea, we have a coaching team that is having a positive effect so let's sack them, after all, we don't want success at the Dragons do we, just think how miserable we would be if we were winning every week.

Yes but we are not going to be winning week in week out. Moral seems to be higher this season though. The 2 new signings will bring some experience as Lee Byrne might be getting on a bit and hopefully hes just not comming here for somewhere to see out the last couple of years before retiring, maybe he'll come back to try to get back into the wales squad, will be interesting to see. Deffinatly need alot more consistency, I really hope that the dragons can start to build more and more because they are better than some of the performances I see. The most important thing to do is to get behind the team as a whole and not knock the coach because someone is leaving, that decision may be beyond his control.

So, let me get this straight... the Dragons have got rid of a 25 year old who is playing the rugby of his life and have signed a (currently injured) 34 year old towards the end of his career. Sounds like an excellent and sensible decision to me... NOT!!

Like most NGD fans I am sorry to see Dan go; we need all the good players we can get, however maybe its a budgetary thing as much as a squad thing? Still I agree Dan would have made a good 12,as he can think as well as play and generally plays what's in front of him and not just to boot and chase/or sideline orders (or so it seems). Good player and someone will snap him up, unfortunately this means he will be playing against us next year!!!

Totally agree Mr Bump, the man is an idiot, has he improved the NEWPORT gwent dragons, not at all. Saturdays result sum's it up Bath made 12 changes, 31 minutes game over. Dan Evans at 25 is the future of NEWPORT,Lee Byrne is a good player but not the future.

Cant see the sense in the coach saying, looking to the future/ then signing a crocked full back who will spend 70% of the time injured, poor decision and sends out wrong signals. The side has not improved, the deckchairs have just been rearranged, Bath didnt get out of second gear I am told and then eased down, and that Cardifff Blues side has got to be the worst team they have ever put on a pitch. We need some powerful front rowers before any other signings or we will continue to just get worse. We would probably be a very good side in English second league at present, it would be interesting to play Worcester, Newcastle, that would tellus where we are as the other Welsh regions have just got worse.

It strikes me that something has happened behind the scenes. Dan has probably fallen out with the coaches over the signing of Lee Byrne. To the doubters I would say ' remember where we were this time last year'.

I think it's all down to budget. We can't have it all. 3 FBs is a luxury. I think Hallom Amos is seen as the future and Lee Byrne a short term measure. Personally I think you'll see him end up backs coach when DE gets fired out the door. It's a big signing in terms of name at least. He been instrumental in the success of the top side in Europe last year. He will bring alot to RP.

I am not happy seeing Dan go but, if we want forwards too, something has to give.

I totally agree with you Mr Bump, I don't think Lyn is an Idiot tough he has a hard job @ RP plus Darren and Kingsley carry the an too

I find it strange that the Dragons would "Invest" in Byrne who is not longer an international player, plus he is injured - Dan hasn't been amazing but at least he tackles unlike Byrne - strange to see him leave in this way - interested to see who else leaves now !!

Well I'm going to defend Lyn Jones on this one and to be frank it's unfair to refer to him as an 'idiot'. At least he has a vision to go beyond what also quite frankly has been mediocre to date. Okay, Monsieur Byrne is getting on but most Welsh players returning from France bring so much experience with them. Besides, tactically having Hallam Amos vying for the 15 shirt is strategically correct, he'll learn more, have greater respect etc. It's a long-term view. ps Lyn I'm pleased to hear you use the name 'Newport' more often in your press releases! Oh yes, I'm sure decent forwards are to follow!
