NOT content with being the star performer for Newport County AFC so far this season, Robbie Willmott wants to justify his new contract with more goals and assists.

The 23-year-old has shone in a number of roles this season, from wing-back to central midfield and winger to striker, and he was rewarded with a new 18-month contract before last week’s 3-3 draw at Accrington Stanley.

He celebrated with the opening goal from a free-kick, his fifth of the campaign, and wants to continue his fine form against Dagenham & Redbridge today – weather permitting.

“I signed the new deal at the hotel when we got there (Accrington) on the Friday night so that was a worry off my shoulders. To get that done before the game was nice,” said Willmott.

“And then I got the goal on Saturday but if the gaffer’s picking me I’ve got to try to make an impact to stay in the team. I’ve got to be scoring goals and making goals.

“I’m playing in a variety of positions at the moment,” he added.

“I started at wing-back at Accrington and ended up playing up front.

“I’ve got seven clean sheets as a wing-back and five goals but wherever the gaffer wants to play me I don’t mind; as long as I’m starting I’m happy.”

Willmott was delighted with the new contract, which was initiated by the club, and says he has a big debt to repay to the Exiles after his move from Cambridge United 12 months ago.

“It’s a massive thing for me,” he said. “I turn 24 in the summer so it was a big deal and I want to stay here as long as possible.

“The fans, directors and chairman have all made me feel welcome and the gaffer has given me my first chance in league football so I just wanted to repay the club and get as much security as possible.”

And Willmott is convinced that County have what it takes to secure a second successive promotion in May.

“We’ve got a very strong squad,” he said. “People outside the club would have looked at us and (Conference champions) Mansfield at the start of the season and said Mansfield would have probably kicked on with the signings they made.

“But we’ve got a very strong squad and with players coming back we’re going to be even stronger.

“We don’t look at the table too much,” he added. “We just want to get three points against Dagenham and try to keep ourselves in a good position.

“As soon as we get back to winning ways we’ll go on another run.”
