MIDFIELDER Lee Minshull knows that Newport County AFC need to build on Tuesday’s win over Oxford United with another three points against Cheltenham Town tomorrow, writes Andrew Penman.

Minshull believes that the 3-2 victory over promotion rivals Oxford could be a big turning point and he wants more of the same as the Exiles have four more consecutive home games.

“It’s been a bit of a drag for fans, players, the management and probably yourselves (the media) as well having to report on so much negative stuff instead of positive stuff on the pitch,” said the 28-year-old.

“It’s a great win. We needed that and with all the home matches coming up we hope we can get some momentum going now.

“People will say teams won’t fancy playing on our pitch but nobody fancied it down here early in the season!

“We’ve got a good home record and if we can focus on that then who knows where we’ll end up.”

Minshull saw his shot deflected into the net by teammate Rene Howe to level matters at 1-1 on Tuesday and he has now begrudgingly accepted that the goal won’t be credited to him.

“He turned and celebrated so he was definitely claiming it but I watched it on Sky Sports just to check it didn’t come off a defender,” said Minshull.

“But we’ll give it to Rene and it was a big moment for us going in all square at half-time.

“We started really well and it was a bit of a kick in the teeth when they scored but that goal gave us a lift and we went on to get the three points.”
