Mansfield 2 County 1

First published in Sport

NEWPORT County AFC suffered late heartbreak at Mansfield Town as Anthony Howell's goal in the final minute robbed them of a hard-earned point.

The Stags led in the first half when goalkeeper Elliot Parish failed to hold on to Ryan Tafazolli's header.

But Mansfield goalkeeper Alan Marriott spilled Tom Naylor's free-kick after the break and Rene Howe was on hand to score Newport's equaliser, before Howell's late winner.

Exiles boss Justin Edinburgh said: "It is very disappointing [conceding a late goal] and we should have dealt with it better.

"For long periods of the second half we dominated and if we don't win the game we certainly make sure we don't lose it.

"Unfortunately we have and that is hugely disappointing and we have to respond because that is not good enough.

"We did enough not to lose the game but the spell after we scored is when we have to be more clinical."

Not far from drop zone, not far from play-offs still!! Two or three wins on the bounce and the situation changes. But we'll not achieve this if manager doesn't change things earlier when things are going wrong - or maybe he realises the quality to change things just isn't there, though he can't admit that. But results today again show anything remains possible in this division and players must keep their heads up and keep fighting.

So little to choose between teams in this division certainly makes County's ultimate position difficult to predict. I suspect we are good enough to stay up but it would be nice if some of these close games went our way. We need a few results now to keep morale up. Just as well we began the season so well !!

Total mystery.
We were told he was back in the squad weeks ago then nothing.
If he ever comes back it will be so difficult to come back to his previous superb
form.
We need Lenny back in goal urgently as well

You need to press the panic button long before you get anywhere near the relegation zone. If you wait until you get there ... then you're already too late.

I honestly think that the Parish blunder has played a bad trick on the boys. Not trying to excuse them, far from it. But I believe the boys are suffering from a psychological effect where everything seems to go bad. To top it up, even the second Mansfield goal came at the death.

Nonetheless, sincerely hoping that the cloud's silver lining for County is behind the corner.

Oh dear! Being beaten by the worst 'team' in the division isn't going to instill confidence. Let's be blatantly honest, and this sounds like sour grapes, but it isn't, it's the truth, Mansfield really are a team of cloggers and ham actors. A 'physical side' is actually a misnomer for a 'team' that kicks anything that moves on the football pitch. That, coupled with some extraordinary refereeing, gave County absolutely no chance! Please don't give up on the squad yet. They need support and to know that the fans(and there are many of us) are right behind them. Harbingers of Doom, get back to where you belong...

This just about sums up Mansfield. Any team with that great lump Matt Rhead in it, just aren't going to be playing nice football.
Unfortunately the referee, and the one against a similar team, Fleetwood, just don't seem able to do anything about the niggly body checking style of game they play.
However we need to score goals and then it won't matter, and surely we have enough strikers on the books to do it.

As you know I am a longstanding County supporter (50 years plus) and frequent contributor to this site. I try to be positive but I am also a realist!
Sad to say it but we have surely run out of lame excuses for this continuing run of awful results by our once super team. One win in twelve is unacceptable. That is the reality of it.
The well intentioned excuses on this site have come thick and fast. First it was RP's pitch, then it was the number of games being played, then it was the terrible refs. Now on a relatively good pitch, which the players have actually yearned for, it's due to a "team of cloggers" that County just could not could not cope with. In just the same was as they could not cope with struggling Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham and Wimbledon.
We are now just 4 points away from Accrington Stanley World.!!!!!
It is time to cease the games in hand comfort zone complacency and for County to wake up and actually start winning some games. Otherwise it is the slippery slope back down to the Conference if these lower placed teams should start to improve.
There I have said it. Does that make really me a "harbinger of doom?"
I think not!
Of course I want County to do well but they have lost the will to win and it is very very sad to see.

I repeat for the umpteenth time that this has always been a season for establishing ourselves as a viable club at this level. A few wins, however edgy and suddenly it's County for the play off's, a few defeats and its gloom and doom ! We are a decent team in a division full of decent teams and the important thing is to adjust to what was always going to be a steep learning curve both for Justin and the players. Forget promotion and lets get behind the current set up to help ensure we avoid the disaster of relegation. It has taken a long long time to get where we are so let's all calm down and proceed sensibly towards the great days ahead ! One step at a time.
