This is my lowest point, says Exiles boss

First published in Sport

NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh admits this is the lowest point of his tenure at Exiles manager, but has backed his squad to get back to winning ways.

County were in cruise control at Morecambe on Tuesday night, 1-0 up and playing as well as they had in weeks before a controversial penalty and red card for Tom Naylor turned the contest completely.

Edinburgh admits that his players have taken a real blow in terms of morale and confidence but he believes they can turn it around.

And he’s more than happy for angry fans to turn their attention to him, rather than his players.

“We have had a long discussion as a group, and it is a group, it’s not about any one individual and we understand we have to look at the run we are on, without being scared of it,” he said.

“We need some points sooner rather than later and to get back to winning ways, but that won’t come from us pointing fingers or laying blame.

“The buck stops with me. That has always been the case.

“I know we will get through this. It’s going to be tough, it’s a bad run, by far the worst we’ve experienced since I’ve been here, but we will learn from this and it’ll only make us stronger.

“The players are extremely low," he added. "They’ve got pride and it’s tough for them to take, but we are doing OK, even if people will criticise me for saying that and laugh at me or frown at me, but I know we’ve got more than enough in that dressing room to turn it around and get back to winning ways and collecting points.”

Edinburgh spent over an hour with his players and then talking with the referee after a contentious evening at the Globe Arena.

“From where I was, I didn’t feel it was a penalty," he said. "I’ve spoken to the referee and told him that.

“Even if it was a foul by Tom Naylor for the penalty and I don’t think it was, there were players covering and the red card seems very harsh, a collision like that shouldn’t warrant a red card."

However, Edinburgh can’t accept the manner of County’s capitulation following Naylor's sending off.

“We’ve had six or seven minutes of madness where we’ve lost our concentration and we’ve gone from being in control of the game to out of it completely,” said the Exiles boss.

“At half time we were in control, I thought we looked good but one incident changed the game and the only thing I criticise the players for is not giving us a chance to regroup and stay in the game. We can’t have that.”

This is a very sad moment to see JE making a statement like this. The fact is the team are demoralised and so are many of the supporters. County are on a bad run but I don't see much real fighting talk from the manager. I don't care where the buck stops, the time has come for the manager to take evasive action. Silly announcements about the axe being wielded are hollow if they are not implemented. For starters drop Howe and Naylor. Go for defence for the next few games especially on RP's awful pitch just to get some points even if it's boring to watch. It is backs to the wall now to keep us in the league. Forget the heroics.Kick it out of the ground if necessary.

Paragraph after Paragraph of hollow statements.
Frankfurt was there last night in the previous article so can go with his description of the teams performance and its not what Justin describes.
Daft as it may seem and I am not a fan but Crowe scored 5 goals in early season. Jolly again despite not scoring would give us something different up front.
Got to be better up front with Zeb than Howe who didn't get a mention all night on the BBC text.
What a difference to that splendid performance against Accrington in the sunshine last autumn.

I totally agree .
This is not the comment of a professional team manager . You may lie in bed and think it, but telling the South Wales Argus is out of order.
I have always said you rarely find a good coach and good man manager in the same person. It is not a criticism but a fact of life .
There should be a Management school for coaches in the summer and help them, ---and prepare them for these tough times.
Those of us who run a large business do not run to the Argus with comments like this when the going gets tough.
If I were the CEO of this club, I would ban all press interviews and releases until they were vetted by me .
This does nothing to help this great club to move forward .
Sound like JE requires some management help and he just concentrates on coaching us through these tough times .
Let the CEO do the man management parts of the business, especially now Tim Harris has departed.

I think JE is in a difficult place right now and whatever he says to the media can be misconstrued when there's few positives around.

We have to remember he is a young manager in his first season in League 2. He is still learning (including dealing with media) and hasn't had such an underperforming squad to motivate before. Not making excuses, but the challenge in his and the clubs first season in League 2 was big enough without the injury list, postponements and awful playing surface. In hindsight the team probably overperformed until Xmas (thankfully) and has seriously underperformed since.

JE is a proud and tough guy used to success so i'm sure he is hurting more than anyone. County are good enough to muster enough points to avoid relegation and the experience will make him a better and stronger manager for next season. Support JE, support the County !

JUSTIN has only got to look back to the team that played in the early season when the players were injured.

what formations, personnel , tactics did you employ then to produce the type of results that put county in 3rd place at one point.

the type of run being experienced now i would have expected when the injured players were out at the start of the season, not the other way around.

i was actually looking forward to getting the injured players back after the wycombe win on boxing day. the position we were in with some class players returning i thought yes the world is our oyster.

but their return seems to have unsettled the players who got us through the incredibly good form at the start of the season.maybe that is the cause of the disruption ? the injured players being played too soon being resented by the guys who got us to third.

if i was MIKE FLYNN id be a put out after scoring the winners against PORTSMOUTH AND WYCOMBE to suddendly be told im not good enough.

ryan jackson part of the defence in the early season who steered us through that good spell or results on the bench for games on end.

even danny crowe one of the top scorers this season , an intelligent footballer, link player, maybe not the tallest of guys, bit chunky looking, but effective , sitting on the bench.

even good old TOM NAYLOR, played all through that good spell, committed himself to the end of the season , then spends most of it on the bench.

there could be alot of players there you think "FXXK IT" why should i put myself out when my efforts werent appreciiated earlier in the season .

BACK TO BASICS (3-5-3)- MCLOUGHLIN,
BACK THREE- NAYLOR, WORLEY, YAKUBU.
MIDFIELD- WILLMOTS, MINSHULL, BURGE, PIPE,
FORWARDS - ZEBROSKI, JOLLEY, CROWE

Very much the early season formation, give it a try justin against exeter

failing that maybe rob santwris can start a fighting fund to get my mate sean over to all the remaining county games. as when he manages to get over there (when he can afford it ), county always win , and always convincingly! LUTON 5-2, OXFORD 3-2., CAMBRIDGE 6-2

but importantly, keep your heads up , regain your confidence and in the words of JOURNEY "DONT STOP BELIEVING"

Three teams attempt to play their various games on a horrendous surface, and County fail to play for weeks at a time. Training may be kept going, but the edge is lost. They're bound to be a bit low and feeling a lack of confidence, which is why we don't need hrping and carping in these forums. I have said before, if we had bad days at work, would we want hundreds of people discussing our misdeeds. I thought not! Mr.Edinburgh has just not suddenly become a failure as a manager. I still think that he has worked wonders for our club.

The pitch will be sorted and we can all start again, hopefully, with Lady Luck and a few poor referees on our side on our side for a change.

I think I'm correct in saying that JE has never lost 3 games on the trot during his tenure ? Terrible manager. One thing I will say is we need to stop all the long balls and get the ball on the deck more - we look a much better side when we do that. I also think there's too much chopping and changing in team selection between matches. Decide what your best team is and stick to it as much as possible (injuries permitting). Personally I think we need Pipe's leadership and battling qualities back, so why not push Jackson further forward which would give us a really solid right flank. I think the front combination needs looking at too. All about picking up points and staying up now. CTID

Righto. Our next 4 games are Exeter ( home), Dagenham and Redbridge ( home), Torquay ( away ), Bury ( home), all within 10 days.......

Fantastic chance to get back to winning ways. And one win will make all the difference. The league is so tight I reckon 56 points should be the safety target.

That's 12 points more, with 12 games to go.

The priority is the first win.

Up the County!

What a ridiculous comment.
Have a look at the definition of fickle. It hardly describes 50 years of support does it? (no competition intended, why did you think it was?)
Fickle fans are the come day go day ones who only turn up when County are winning, unlike me!!!!! Especially as I travel from Bristol + bridge toll for each match. How many fickle fans do that??? (not a mileage competition either!)
To be frank I am disgusted with the team's performance since December and will not be be prevented from criticising a lot of this manager's dubious team selections of late either just because it makes some people uncomfortable. Comprendez? It is MY point of view. This is the purpose of this site and for everyone else too.

We cannot let the bully boys take over.
I remember after one comment you posted you were told by one of these bullies you're not welcome at RP and stay home. Pathetic!!
We all pay our way, couple of quid cheaper these days and if the team are playing poorly we are entitled to query what is going on.
Blimey we have seen some crises in the past.
The Yank Chairman saga and I can even remember the Argus asking for a whip round to keep the club afloat and it got a few hundred quid.
This is nothing new and here's hoping a coupe of good results turn the season around again for us.
Keep commenting Llandaff ignore the bullies.

Harps, llandaff do you not think there are any fickle fans then? I certainly was not referring to either of you as I don't know you and your comments do not reflect that. Of course you are entitled to your opinion, who suggested otherwise? You have issues with team selection and performance, that's understandable on the current terrible run. So no need to react and call other fans who are just expressing their opinions "bully boys".

So were you "disgusted" with the performances against Oxford and Scunthorpe then ? You may travel from Bristol and you may have "supported" the team for a long time but does that necessarily make you a good fan ? No. Out of interest, why is your username Llandaff ? (just thinking of the obvious association with Cardiff)
