NEWPORT Gwent Dragons' former Wales lock Adam Jones has announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old, who was capped against England and Scotland in the 2006 Six Nations, was out of contract at the end of the season.

Jones underwent an operation on his foot yesterday has opted to concentrate on a burgeoning fitness business rather than attempting to find a new club upon his recovery.

He signed for the Dragons from the Scarlets in 2007 as a replacement for Ian Gough and went on to make 127 appearances for the region, the last of which came in the home LV= Cup defeat to Northampton in January.

"I would like to thank everyone at Rodney Parade who has made my time such an enjoyable experience and helped me to further my rugby career," said Jones.

"I have been with the Dragons since 2007 and have been playing professionally for about 16 years. I have definitely watched the squad grow throughout the years and have their ups and downs, season to season.

"But with the likes of (director of rugby) Lyn Jones here I can see the club becoming one of the best in Wales and am disappointed to be leaving at this time."

Jones fell behind Andrew Coombs, Robert Sidoli, Cory Hill and Matthew Screech in the pecking order this season.

The Dragons are closing in on another seasoned lock for next season while both the management team and academy bosses are extremely excited by the potential of 18-year-old Joe Davies.

The Newport High School pupil made his regional debut alongside Jones in the LV= Cup clash against the Scarlets at the age of just 17 last November and was selected ahead of his age-grade by Wales Under-20s in the Six Nations.

Jones, meanwhile, will now be able to devote all his time to Revolution Runs, a business that will hold obstacle course running events.

Let's hope we replace him well. Sidoli seems to be ageing quickly and we need experience alongside the likes of Screech and Hill.

It is a sham that Mr Kirwan could not find the time to report on a true professional like Adam, He choose to copy most of his report only to add negative comments. Could he not find the compassion to write a report purely on Adam Jones achievements.

I see from other sites he has received good luck messages from people all over the UK and overseas .He will be missed by fans and other players.

Mr Kirwin it would have been nice for you to do a bit of research and educate yourself on the vast rugby career Adam Jones has had and the caps he has won from an early age.

I wish Adam the very best of luck in his new venture and hope you still pop down to Rodney Parade.

Agree with gaven21, give the boy some credit!

Google is great...
First player to make 100 appearances for the Scarlets.
Holds record for the number of regional player appearances since the regions formation in 2003.
Represented Wales at all age levels and captained a successful U19 Welsh side in 1999.

There's a start CK!..

I think I speak for the Dragons' supporters in Thanking you for your loyal service over the last 7 years. Hugely underated as a player, you will be missed and pob luc in your new venture!

Never saw him give less than 100% and that is all you can ask. Will be sadly missed especially as l expect Sid to follow at the end of the season, would be great if we could get Long Dog back we desperately need experience in the pack.
Good luck Adam.

An outstandingly talented player. Players who have played with him say that on his day he was as good as any lock in the world and he has played against some very good ones.

Every success with your business venture, enjoy your retirement
