Kody Davies sets his sights on Glasgow

First published in Sport

PONTLLANFRAITH heavyweight Kody Davies has added his name to the list of Gwent boxers hoping to be picked for the Commonwealth Games, writes Andrew Penman.

The 19-year-old amateur ace landed his first senior title and put himself in pole position to represent Wales in Glasgow this summer with victory in the Elite Welsh Heavyweight Championships at the Cardiff House of Sport

Davies, who trains with his dad Kevin at their Lion’s Den gym in Pontllanfraith, beat 32-year-old David Walker of Pontypool by unanimous decision in the 91kg final.

Kevin said: “Kody stuck to the game plan; using his long fast jab pinging walker to the head and body, setting him up for the thunderous body shots that took their toll on Walker.

“In the second round Kody then switched back upstairs and caught Walker with a crisp right hook to the temple which dropped him to his knees.

“He continued on only to be flustered with hundreds of lightening fast shots through to the final bell.”

Kody said: It was awesome boxing in front of my friends and family who rarely get to see me in action.

“I always love boxing on home soil and to win my first senior Welsh finals in front of my home crowd was an amazing experience.

“My sights are now firmly set on a place representing my country at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The southpaw star added: "I want to thank the national coaches Colin Jones and Mark James for spending a lot of time with me at Sport Wales.

“Thanks to Unique Fitness for allowing me to use their facilities, and a massive thank you to my father and coach Kevin Davies who I could not have done any of this without."

Davies joins Newport’s Sean McGoldrick and his St Joseph’s stablemates Joe Cordina and Jacob Robinson and Torfaen Warriors fighter Ashley Brace in the running for the Glasgow 2014 team.
