We owe the fans a home win, says County striker

South Wales Argus: POSITIVE: Newport County striker Shaun Jeffers POSITIVE: Newport County striker Shaun Jeffers

NEWPORT County AFC striker Shaun Jeffers says the players are desperate for a home win to reward the club’s fans for their support.

The Exiles have won only once in 11 games at Rodney Parade in 2014 and that was back on February 18 against Oxford United.

Jeffers says the players want to put on a show and get a win for the supporters after Tuesday’s home defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

And Justin Edinburgh’s men know that a win over relegation-threatened Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow would put to bed any fears that they could be dragged towards the drop zone.

“We’re all disappointed by that defeat because we came into it in good form after the draw at Chesterfield,” said the former Peterborough United front man.

“We were very positive after getting a goal back so early on but then we conceded again very quickly.

“We keep chasing games at the moment and we’ve got lots of character in the squad but that’s difficult to do every week.

“We need to rectify our mistakes and improve on Saturday because we haven’t won at home for a while now.

“Our form has dipped and we’re desperate to put on a better performance for the fans, who have been great and stuck with us all the way.

“We’ve got a great squad here with a lot of talent,” he added. “We showed that at the start of the season and hopefully we can get back to that kind of form towards the end of the season.

“We want to finish the season well and take that momentum into the new campaign.”

Jeffers, who arrived at the club in January as part of the deal that took Conor Washington to London Road, is enjoying life in South Wales despite the team’s poor form.

“I’ve settled in well,” said the 21-year-old from Bedford. “The lads have welcomed me and I’m looking forward to next season.

“I want to establish myself in the team and I know I’ve got to keep working hard.

“I want to help the team as much as I can. I’ve been lucky enough to have got a couple of starts in the past few games and it’s been great to get the opportunity to show what I can do.

“Hopefully I can keep helping the team and I can help us get a win against Wycombe.”

I was really impressed with Jeffers first half the other night - give the lad a chance for the whole 90 minutes otherwise confidence and form will be tempered. He's waited patiently for his chance, so give it to him - others have tried and failed to get us goals

Another ridiculous statement of the obvious

Mr Jeffers, we'd just like to see you score or even for that matter, look like scoring please. Have a look at your jd, its likely to mention that the idea of a forward is to ultimately score goals. Novel idea I realise

Nothing against the lad but once again totally pointless drivel being spouted about not wanting to disappoint us fans etc. Its a total joke these comments should be a basic reason for playing to win every point possible.

These inane write ups are pathetic. "Our form has dipped"

Just prove it on the pitch if you get a game

DDDog1 is correct, we really can't afford to lose tomorrow. We need a point minimum but on recent form I'm not confident.

Just get out there and play! Do the players ever train? They seem to be giving Argus interviews every 5 minutes stating the obvious! Rene Howe announces "The sky is blue" Shaun Jeffers exclusively informs us that "water is wet" Prima Donna FC. GET. ON. WITH. IT.

These players should be talking about pride and playing for the team . The fans want a win of course, but they want to hear about players who are proud to be playing for this city. .
They owe me nothing ----I willing paid my ticket money-----they owe themselves a lot more ---and certainly owe the manager who has had to put up with this crap for far too long .
His biggest mistake is writing in the SWA every other day about how unlucky the team has been and should have won .
Also he should take a good look at every single injury this season----there are obviously some genuine ones , but having two keepers out for months at the same time ???----and many , many others .
Is there a training issue , a overall fitness issue , a rotund overweight issue ?????? and so on .
Too many injuries for there not to be an underlying problem.
There is no injury jinx ---there is a problem that should be thoroughly investigated.
