JOHN Aldridge has been voted the best player ever to represent Newport County in a special Football League poll.

The polls were run by The Football League to celebrate each club’s own contribution to the last 125 years of league football.

Nearly 100,000 votes were cast in the polls via social media.

With 61 per cent of the vote, Aldridge beat Len Weare and Ray Wilcox to be named County’s best player.

Len Ashurst was voted the club’s greatest manager ahead of Justin Edinburgh and Dean Holdsworth and the 1979/80 season, when the club won promotion from Division Four and were crowned Welsh Cup champions under Ashurst, was the best ever campaign.
