DOUBLE London Olympic gold medalist Laura Trott will be riding the roads of Monmouthshire this summer as she became the first major women's star to enter the 2014 British Cycling National Road and Time Trial Championships.

The 21-year-old won gold on the track in the 2012 Olympics in the omnium event - cycling's version of heptathlon in athletics - and the team sprint.

And the Harlow-born star has already shown she is in excellent form this season to mount a challenge for a national jersey by taking the UCI World Track Championships team pursuit crown with Cardiff's Elinor Barker, Scotland's Katie Archibald and Carshalton's Olympic champion Joanna Rowsell in February.

Trott has entered both the National Time Trial Championships on Thursday, June 26, and also the Elite Road Championships on Sunday, June 29, and will ride the Elite Road course around Monmouthshire just hours after hundreds of women will take to the course in the Championship Sportive public ride on Saturday, June 28.

Trott's career has been predominantly based on the track cycling scene but she was National Road Race Championships Under-23 winner in both 2011 and 2013, coming second in the Elite Women's race in Glasgow last year to take the age group title.

Her entry comes just two weeks after reigning men's National Time Trial champion Alex Dowsett confirmed he will be defending his title in Monmouthshire on a spectacular closed roads course that starts and finishes at the Celtic Manor Resort and is set to see thousands of fans lining the route.

Bill Owen, Wales' representative on the British Cycling board, said: "This is fantastic news that Laura has entered both the Time Trial and Elite Women's road race.

"We are expecting more stars to sign-up in the coming weeks and we anticipate making other major announcements, but to have our first London Olympic Games gold medalist - and a double one at that - plus a reigning world champion confirming entry is brilliant."
